Sebastián Martínez-Risco na cultura galega is a new study by Xosé Ramón Freixeiro Mato on the writings and biography of Sebastián Martínez-Risco, and the author’s lifelong commitment to the promotion, protection and creation of Galician culture. The study includes an extensive survey of Martínez-Risco’s private correspondence and newspaper records from the period, with specific analysis of the author’s essays on language, literary, history and society.

A selection of previously unseen documents offers new insight into different aspects of Galician culture and politics from the end of the civil war in Spain to the restoration of democratic elections in 1977, and highlights the often key role played by the Royal Galician Academy (RAG) during that period. The annotated correspondence between Martínez-Risco and Ramón Piñeiro, in particular, illustrates and explains some of the actions and decisions of the so-called ‘historical’ Galicianist movement, the influence of Piñeiro’s culturalist interpretation of Galician nationalism following the civil war, and the operations and activities of the RAG on behalf of culture, politics and society in Galicia.
