Description

Though one of the most important members of the so-called ‘crossover generation’ of the turn of the 20th century, Antonio Noriega Varela has remained a largely elusive figure up to now, with his life and work hidden away among the marginalia of Galician literary history.

A cara oculta de Noriega Varela is one of the first properly documented biographies of the writer and provides readers with a wealth of new information about the author and insights into his life and work, based on an extensive process of research and analysis.

Eschewing the merely episodic or anecdotal, Freixeiro Mato’s biography explores the man and the ideology behind his work: who he was and how he thought.

The 68 new poems unearthed by Freixeiro Mato’s research (55 in Galician and 13 in Spanish) reveal a hitherto unknown satirical side of Noriega and represent a substantive expansion of the existing corpus of the writer’s poetry. In addition to his humoristic chronicle of the dramatic political events of the 1930s, the volume also includes two prose texts, the only known texts of their kind by the author. The book ends with a collection of significant archival material from Noriega’s life, two interviews with the author, and 18 letters written by him to leading cultural and political figures of the time, including Ramón Otero Pedrayo.
