Laura Tato’s latest work is an annotated anthology of four plays written and staged during the first seven years of the Irmandades da Fala, from the organisation’s foundation in 1916 to its interruption by the Primo de Rivera dictatorship in 1923. The plays featured in the volume are: Donosiña by Xaime Quintanilla, Entre dous abismos by Antón Villar Ponte, María Rosa by Gonzalo López Abente, and Un caso compricado by Leandro Carré Alvarellos.

The introductory essay, ‘A new theatre for a new age’, looks at the project of Galician dramatic revival and renewal envisioned by the Irmandades, and provides a brief description and analysis of each of the plays, together with an explanation of the rationale behind their selection. Tato’s instructive new annotated edition is recommended for any reader interested in learning more about Galician culture.
