Description

This new textbook for third-year students of Galician Language and Literature forms part of the Baía Edicións educational collection covering all levels of the compulsory secondary school cycle (ESO).

The textbook comprises 12 teaching units and a series of appendix sections. Each unit is divided into eight lesson blocks and one revision worksheet.

1) Reading. Selection of texts based on student tastes and interests, literary value, diversity of genre (narrative, poetic, dramatic, journalistic, advertising, etc.), gender balance, and range of topics.

2) Speaking. Speaking activities focusing on different communicative tasks (asking for information, describing a person, giving a different opinion, etc.), aimed at developing student speaking and listening skills.

3) Language and writing. Use of different text types (everyday, formal, informal, etc.), to encourage students to reflect on and practise using language and structures in an accurate and appropriate way.

4) Vocabulary. Illustrated themed vocabulary and semantic analysis of words and their meanings, with exercises and activities designed to help students to organise and expand their vocabulary.

5) Grammar. Introduction to grammatical categories and how language is organised, using clear, accessible terminology and tables.

6) Spelling. Theory, examples and exercises in relation to accents, punctuation, spelling rules for difficult words, etc.

7) Language and society. History of the Galician language prior to 1916, and sociolinguistic concepts, such as bilingualism, diglossia, linguistic conflict, normalisation, standardisation, Portuguese-speaking culture, linguistic variation within Galicia, language legislation, etc.  The activities in this section are aimed at encouraging research and problem-solving skills, with particular focus on the use of electronic resources and learning how to learn.

8) Literature. Study topics (genre, style, technique, Galician literature prior to 1916) are accompanied by two sets of activities: one based on literary concepts, and one based on the period and authors covered in the unit.

Each unit concludes with a revision worksheet focusing on the seven competences stated in the LOMCE. The worksheet is based on a topical, targeted non-literary text, the content of which varies from unit to unit. The first set of exercises is designed to test comprehension of the text, while the second allows students to practise and consolidate the competences developed in the unit.
