Auto chamado dos Enfatriões is one of the three plays that make up the total dramatic output of Luís de Camões. The play is based on the classical myth of Jupiter’s transformation into the Theban general, Amphitryon, and modelled on the Latin Amphitruo by the Roman playwright, Plautus. Camões’s rendering is, therefore, just one outstanding example in a long tradition of authors and adaptations spanning centuries of western literature.
What sets this version apart from others, is the perfect synthesis Camões achieves between the Portuguese Vicentine tradition and the classically inspired comedy of the Renaissance, in an early foretaste of what were to become some of the most characteristic features and themes of the author’s epic and lyrical poetry: the power of love, the fragility of identity, and the humanity of the gods.
