Do teatro ao cinema examines two areas of interest in the rich and varied intellectual life of Ramón Otero Pedrayo: theatre and film. Otero Pedrayo did little to promote the cause of theatre in Galicia prior to 1936, convinced that no theatre could thrive or make any meaningful impact without a great city behind it. It was during his years of seclusion in Ourense under the Franco dictatorship that he realised his error in relation to theatre, and discovered the power of film as an ideological tool.
This short volume analyses the dramatic work of Otero Pedrayo in the context of planned literary regeneration by the men and women of Nós and the Irmandades. Using new documentary sources, the study also looks at the writer’s relationship with cinema in the 1950s, and with the production company, Suevia Films, in particular. The book is completed by a discussion of the texts of Otero’s plays and film scripts.
