Roberto Vidal Bolaño believed that the use of the word ‘national’ in relation to the theatre in Galicia should not be circumscribed by the ideology of any political party. When politics fails to defend the country’s language, the most potent symbol of its identity, what option remains but for the theatre to seek refuge in the people and culture that have given it life and form? That may be, at least, why a heart-and-soul Galician nationalist like Roberto Vidal Bolaño preferred to use the term ‘popular’, rather than ‘national’ to talk about the theatre in Galicia.
