Description

The aim of this project is to put into effect the research and learning potential of the Annotated Critical Glossary of Medieval Galician-Portuguese Poetry (GLOSSA; http://glossa.gal), through the preparation and publication of an online critical edition of one of the key sections of the corpus of secular Galician-Portuguese lyric poetry: the Cantigas d’amor (‘Songs of Love’).

GLOSSA is the collective result of two phases of research, carried out between 2010-2015 with the support of the Ministry of Science and Technology (cantigas d’amor and cantigas d’amigo, 2010-2012) and the Ministry of Finance and Competition (cantigas d’escarnho, 2013-2015).
This annotated online critical edition of texts from the first section of the cancioneiro, or ‘songbook’ (numbers 1-640 of a total 1683 texts and fragments, based on J.-M. d’Heur’s (1963) referencing system), uses the latest methods in textual criticism, starting with the loci critici identified and examined during the different phases of the overall project, and making valuable use of the insights into and comprehension of the full corpus gained through that process. The publication of an online critical edition of this portion of the songbook – to be expanded in the future by companion editions of the cantigas d’amigo and cantigas d’escarnho – provides users with access to sections of the materials catalogued in GLOSSA, enabling them to cross-reference and draw connections between items in the source texts and glossary.

A further dimension of this project has been the design, development and phased implementation of a powerful new online platform, hosting annotated cantiga texts, the glossary and relevant supplementary resources. The aim and aspiration of this platform is to become a touchstone for the study and transmission of one of the most important poetic traditions in the Iberian peninsula and Europe, on a par with those of France, Italy and Occitania; not alone in Hispanic countries, but throughout the Romance-speaking world. As anticipated, the first instalment of the glossary platform is already showing very positive results among researchers internationally, with 2033 visits from 1598 different users in June 2015 alone (www.glossa.gal).
